Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Fatal Error

In the Event of Windows 7 service pack 1 corrupting your OS
You should get a fatal error on boot underneath the windows logo.
This Is normally caused by a power outage or the machine being turned off during the update
to service pack 1

  1. Restart the computer and boot into startup repair
  2. Once the repair utility start scanning hit cancel and click through till you can access the ‘View advanced options for recovery and support’.
  3. Open Command prompt
  4. Type %windir%\system32\notepad.exe and hit enter
  5. Once notepad has opened go to; File>Open.(set to view all files instead of just .txt.) then browse to the OS partition then into the Windows folder then open the folder named Winsxs e.g: C:\Windows\winsxs
  6. Once you are in this folder find Pending.xml and make a copy of it!!, Once you have a backup copy of the xml open the original.
  7. When this is open hit ‘CTRL’ + ‘F’  into the search box type the following exactly: ‘0000000000000000.cdf-ms’.
  8. Once you have found this delete the following text

<Checkpoint/>
<DeleteFile path="\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\_0000000000000000.cdf-ms"/>
<MoveFile source="\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\e56db1db48d4cb0199440000b01de419._0000000000000000.cdf-ms" destination="\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\_0000000000000000.cdf-ms"/>

  1. DO NOT REMOVE ANY OTHER BITS OF TEXT
  2. Save the file and close it, exit out of command prompt.
  3. Reboot computer and start windows normally.

Windows may take some time to boot (Looking like its stalled on the windows splash screen) don’t panic it isn’t broken just leave it for upto 10 mins and your machine should be back to normal.
